Het Oosten in ons Midden

Ik zag in de statistieken van mijn blog een bezoeker uit Iran.

Wie is het en vanwaar uit dit grote en voor ons mysterieuze land. Zou hij of zij ook bezig zijn met de onrust in het Midden-Oosten? Ik ben nog nooit zo blij geweest met bommen als toen het westen op het allerlaatste moment besloot de opstand in Libië te steunen. Het gaf weer enig tegenwicht voor het cynische van de wereldpolitiek. Maar what about Syrië, Iran, Saoedi-Arabië. Daar wordt niet ingegrepen, wat er ook gebeurt. Te riskant, teveel belangen.

Zo ongelooflijk moedig vind ik de burgers van Syrië. De straat op te gaan in een land waar in 1982 in de stad Hama tienduizend mensen (en volgens Amnesty zelfs 25.000) zijn uitgemoord om een opstand af te straffen. Ook in deze stad zijn nu weer demonstraties.

Het lijkt dan allemaal zo onbelangrijk, waar we ons hier druk om maken. We zijn toch vrij, we hebben geld, we hebben eten? We hebben niet eens aardbevingen en tsunami's.

April 28- Since the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 and Ceaucescu and other dictators were removed from Eastern Europe a long time has passed. When the uprisings in Tunesia started, and Egypt, I didn't feel the same joy or relief or even a sense of 'history is happening now'. Of course the Middle East is further away, the world has changed, I've grown older... but I wish to believe in a worldwide move towards more democracy. The people on the streets and those who are willing to in Syria, Bahrein, Iran... are in my thoughts.

(summary of the above: I wonder whether the visitors from Iran on this blog are busy with the uprisings. I was 'happy' with the bombs on Lybia: finally the western world does something. But they won't do anything in Syria, Iran; to risky and to many interests. So courageous the people of Hama are, where so many were killed in the past already. It all seems so unimportant then, the 'problems' in Holland (we do have freedom, money, food, we don't even have earthquakes or tsunami's).
